GOVERNMENT OF ST. KITTS AND NEVIS COMMITTED TO CREATING AN ECONOMIC CLIMATE THAT PROMOTES LOCAL INVESTMENTS

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, September 18, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The efforts of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to foster an economic environment that promotes the establishment of small and medium sized enterprises continue to reap rewards for ordinary citizens, as more individuals are taking the bold step of starting their businesses in the Federation.

On Monday (September 17), two local businessmen – Mr. Lennox Liburd and Mr. Rawle Isaac of Cayon – opened the doors of the Green Valley Super Gas Station in Cayon during a ceremony that was attended by Government ministers, family members and residents of that community.

Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris was among those in attendance who expressed words of commendation to Mr. Liburd and Mr. Isaac for their creativity, ingenuity and their willingness to invest in the economic landscape of the twin island Federation.

The prime minister said, “Our country needs all of its citizens, at home in St. Kitts and Nevis and abroad, to rise to the occasion and become true champions of our theme [for Independence] ‘Love, Service, Patriotism and Pride’ and there is no better exponent of this than my very good friend Lennox Dennis Liburd of Cayon and Rawle Isaac.”

Prime Minister Harris further noted that his Team Unity Government welcomes this type of entrepreneurial spirit among its citizens and residents.

“My administration stands first and foremost with local investors in St. Kitts and Nevis—first and foremost with local entrepreneurs in this our land of our birth,” Dr. Harris said, while stressing that it is for this reason why his administration pumped more than $30 million into its Fresh Start Programme that has helped more than five hundred persons either start or expand their small and medium sized enterprises in the Federation.

Parliamentary Representative for the area, the Honourable Eugene Hamilton, hailed Mr. Liburd and Mr. Isaac for their vision and leadership in opening the gas station, which he said will spur additional economic activity in the Cayon and surrounding communities.

The minister continued, “Today we see something happening here, which has the potential to turn people into financially independent people because the youngsters of today can look at what you are doing and emulate you rather than emulate those who carry around guns.”

In addition to opening the Green Valley Super Gas Station, Mr. Liburd and Mr. Isaac also launched the Cayon Community Development Association which is designed to improve the social and economic wellbeing of the residents and to harness the talents and skills of individuals within the Cayon community.

Mr. Isaac stated, “I have a company called Global Consulting, and I am making the services of Global free to any organization. Anybody who has an idea and think that it can work, come and see me. I am saying to you, we want to create a class of capitalists here [in Cayon] and we must change this community.”
