Japan
A productive lunch meeting at the Mango Tree Tokyo with Mr. Takahiro Nakamae, Director
General of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs, Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
Japan, where critical issues between our two countries were discussed as well as future
collaborative initiatives to deepening our longstanding friendship.

3. Foreign Minister Mark Brantley pays courtesy call on Senior Vice-President of Japan International Cooperation Agency
It was a busy day of engagements for St. Kitts and Nevis’ delegation to Japan led by the Minister
of Foreign Affairs and Aviation, Hon. Mark Brantley. Minister Brantley held discussions with
Mr. Shigeru Maeda, Senior Vice-President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
regarding strengthening the relationship between JICA and St. Kitts and Nevis and exploring new
technical programs for the benefit of our citizens. Minister Brantley also expressed his desire for
JICA to explore on a bilateral basis projects relating to geothermal energy in St. Kitts and Nevis,
indicating that the Federation has already embarked on a path towards the use of renewable energy.
Minister Brantley also expressed the need for vocational training for young people and other
interested persons. JICA pledged their continued support to work with the Government of St. Kitts
and Nevis to address its development needs.

4. Foreign Minister Taro Kono hosts Foreign Minister Brantley at working dinner in
Tokyo, Japan.
At the invitation of Foreign Minister Taro Kono of Japan, the Honorable Mark Brantley engaged
in bilateral discussions at a working dinner in Tokyo, Japan during his visit to that country. The
Foreign Ministers engaged in discussions on a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues
including climate change and the relaxing of travel restrictions between the two countries. Minister
Kono and Minister Brantley also discussed the issue relating to the difficulties encountered by
Saint Kitts and Nevis and other countries in CARICOM in accessing concessionary loans having
graduated to middle income status. Other matters discussed included nuclear weapons
proliferation, security on the Korean Peninsula, China-Taiwan relations and deeper cooperation in
international fora. Minister Brantley also used the opportunity to convey the gratitude of the
Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis for Japan’s longstanding support to the Federation
and invited the Foreign Minister to visit St. Kitts and Nevis in the near future.
