Cayon Man Acquitted On Gun Charge

St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Ian Hull is a free man after a he was acquitted of gun and ammunition charges on Thursday.

Hull, a resident of Cunningham Village, Cayon, was in May 2016 charged with illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

The trial began Tuesday at the Basseterre High Court. Hull was represented by defense attorney Jason Hamilton while Crown Counsel Greatess Gordon and Vaughn Woodley presented for the prosecution.

Among the four witnesses the prosecution called to the stand were the two officers who carried out the search and find, and a firearms expert.

The prosecution’s case was that police saw a group of young men who ran once the officers approached and Hull was seen throwing something under a car that was sitting on cement blocks. A search turned up a Smith and Wesson .40 hand gun loaded with 14 rounds of matching ammunition.

Hull, a former member of the Defense Force, took the stand and gave evidence that while he was relieving himself near an old car in the village, police officers gave chase to some males who ran near his direction. He said the officers found the gun under the car and arrested him, although he had no knowledge of how it came to be there.

After brief deliberations, the jury returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty.
