From March 20, a curfew will be imposed in the Bahamas as authorities seek to reduce opportunities for coronavirus (COVID-19) transmissions.
Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis announced the curfew on Thursday saying it will run from 9 pm to 5 am until March 31.
“These are very strong measures that are intended to save lives, protect health and to aggressively attack the spread of COVID-19,” Minnis said.
The Government will consult with medical experts to determine if it should be extended.
The curfew is one of a series of social distancing initiatives included in the Emergency Powers (COVID-19) Order, 2020, which was passed in the House of Assembly on Wednesday.
The Order also suspends all non-essential businesses, public transportation and events.
Businesses that are allowed to operate can do so between 9 am and 5 pm.
Only restaurants offering take out and construction sites can operate past 5 pm`.
All trained nurses and Government officers on vacation or retirement have also been called out to assist with prevention efforts.
Minnis called on Bahamians not to panic buy food or gasoline since there are adequate stores on the island.
There are currently three cases of coronavirus in the Bahamas.
