The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) is advising people to be cautious when using their mobile devices online as hackers target these devices also.
Information Security Analyst, Genelle Lake, says there is a misconception that hacking and viruses are reserved only for computers and laptops, but this is not the case. She says phones are ´treasure troves´ of information which people use for various reasons. Therefore, mobile devices are also susceptible to being hacked.
Lake says if your mobile device is slow to load pages, Apps crash frequently or your battery dies too quickly, these could be warning signs that your device has been hacked or may signal the presence of malware or viruses. If you encounter any of these issues, she advises that you take the device to the nearest phone specialist to have them investigate and advise accordingly.
Lake also encourages the public to enable automatic updates, ensure that Apps are downloaded only from the official App Stores and limit the access that Apps have to your device. These measures, she says, can help to protect your mobile device from malicious intent.
