PRIME MINISTER HARRIS PRAISES THE LIFE, WORK AND SERVICE OF THE LATE VANCE AMORY, FORMER PREMIER OF NEVIS
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, April 13, 2022 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, dedicated his bi-weekly virtual forum, Leadership Matters, to the memory, life and work of His Excellency Vance Winkworth Amory, former Premier of Nevis and Senior Minister in the Federal Government.
On the show dedicated entirely to Ambassador Amory, Prime Minister Harris described the late Mr. Amory as a well-respected and widely admired politician.
“Over the past ten days, we received an outpouring of love and tributes for a truly great man. Tributes have come from politicians, teachers, bankers, diplomats, the clergy, as well as from supporters and opponents—a theme of service resonates. For others what stood out were his God fearing nature, his intelligence, his resourcefulness, and strong determination. His charming, infectious personality was evident to all. It is testament to his yeoman service as a public servant that tributes were received from across the entire hemisphere,” Prime Minister Harris told listeners and viewers to the Tuesday, April 12, edition of Leadership Matters.
Tributes for the late premier were received from prime ministers, premiers, ambassadors, and organizations such as the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and CARICOM.
Prime Minister Harris elaborated on Premier Amory’s leadership, particularly in relation to the development of the island of Nevis.
He said, “Under his premiership, the landscape and the economy of Nevis improved dramatically and permanently. In the ten years from 1992, Nevis saw unprecedented infrastructural and housing boom. Middle class communities such as Ramsbury, Upper Stoney Grove, Marion Heights and Prospect developed—Projects such as the Newcastle airport expansion to becoming upgraded to an International Airport, the Deep Water Port at Long Point, the Charlestown Port and Waterfront upgrade and expansion. There was the asphalt plant commissioning which built expertise (at PWD) and lowered the cost of road repairs. During his premiership, construction of the Samuel Hunkins Drive and Charlestown Bypass Road were completed. This eliminated congestion and pollution in Charlestown.”
His Excellency Vance Amory – a talented cricketer, teacher, banker, community activist, public servant, politician, Premier, Senior Minister and Ambassador Extraordinary Plenipotentiary assigned in the Office of the Prime Minister – passed away on Saturday, April 02, 2022 in the United Kingdom where he was seeking medical treatment.
