Organisations express solidarity with journalists in Guyana victims of online harassment
The Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) and IFEX-ALC network condemn in the
strongest possible terms the intimidation of journalists in Guyana and call on the Government to
immediately set the tone for a cessation of such acts that ultimately serve to fertilise the ground
for an escalation of such acts that can ultimately lead to physical harm.
The ACM and IFEX-ALC further implores the government to urge its supporters to refrain from
intimidatory behaviour.
Guyana is a signatory to the Media Freedom Coalition which recognises that a strong
democratic tradition requires a free and fair media. Threats and harassment of journalists run
counter to that principle.
The ACM and IFEX-ALC note with concern the harassment directed towards Kaieteur News
reporter Davina Bagot at a press conference hosted by President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. She has
since been subjected to cyberbullying and personal attacks from government supporters. The
President of the Guyana Press Association Nazima Raghubir has also been the victim of
cyberbullying and personal attacks in the state-owned newspaper. It is important to note that
Ms. Raghubir is also the vice-president of the ACM.
These are not isolated cases that are only confined to the People’s Progressive Party Civic
(PPPC)-led administration as there have been instances in which the opposition and its
supporters have also engaged in hostilities towards state media workers. Recently Guyana
Chronicle’s Tamica Garnett was verbally abused by a senior member of People’s National
Congress Reform she called for a comment. The ACM believes that there is no coincidence
between the posture of senior political operatives and content in the State-owned media as well
as a Facebook profile that is believed to be controlled by an associate or associates of the
governing party.
The ACM and IFEX-ALC are calling for cooler heads to prevail and for politicians to exercise
restraint and encourage their members and supporters to do the same.
The ACM and IFEX-ALC stands in solidarity with journalists Davina Bagot, Nazima Raghubir,
Tamica Garnett and other media workers in Guyana in their quest to perform their duties freely.
The organisations endorse steps that have been taken to report the two latest incidents to the
Guyana Police Force and the Constitutional Women and Gender Equality Commission.

La Asociación de Trabajadores de los Medios de Comunicación del Caribe (ACM) y la red
IFEX-ALC condenan enérgicamente la intimidación de periodistas en Guyana y exhortan al
Gobierno del país a que propicie un clima tendiente a poner fin a tales acciones, que abonan el
terreno para una escalada de actos intimidatorios que pueden conducir a agresiones físicas.
ACM e IFEX-ALC instan además al Gobierno a que exhorte a sus partidarios a abstenerse de
comportamientos intimidatorios contra la prensa.
Guyana es signataria de la Coalición por la Libertad de los Medios de Comunicación, que
reconoce que una prensa libre e imparcial es condición necesaria para la vigencia plena de la
democracia. Las amenazas y el acoso a periodistas son contrarios a ese principio.
ACM e IFEX-ALC observan con preocupación el hostigamiento sufrido por la reportera de
Kaieteur News Davina Bagot en una conferencia de prensa convocada por el Presidente
Mohamed Irfaan Ali. La periodista ha sido desde entonces objeto de ciberacoso y ataques
personales por parte de simpatizantes del gobierno. La Presidenta de la Asociación de la
Prensa de Guyana Nazima Raghubir también ha sido víctima de ciberacoso y ataques
personales en el diario estatal. Es importante señalar que Nazima Raghubir es también
vicepresidenta de ACM.
No se trata de casos aislados que se limitan únicamente al gobierno del Partido Progresista del
Pueblo – Cívico (PPP-C), ya que ha habido instancias en las que la oposición y sus partidarios
también han protagonizado actos hostiles contra trabajadores de los medios estatales. En un
hecho reciente, la periodista Tamica Garnett, de Guyana Chronicle, fue agredida verbalmente
por un importante miembro del partido opositor Congreso Nacional del Pueblo – Reforma,
cuando ella lo llamó para pedirle una declaración. Existe un patrón de estigmatización y
ataques contra periodistas por parte de altas figuras políticas y los medios estatales, así como
de un perfil de Facebook que se presume está administrado por una o más personas asociadas
al partido de gobierno.
ACM e IFEX-ALC hacen un llamado a calmar los ánimos y exhortan a los políticos a actuar con
moderación y alentar a sus partidarios y simpatizantes a hacer lo mismo.
ACM e IFEX-ALC se solidarizan con las periodistas Davina Bagot, Nazima Raghubir, Tamica
Garnett y otros trabajadores de los medios de Guyana en su clamor para ejercer libremente su
trabajo. Las organizaciones respaldan las medidas que se han tomado para denunciar los
últimos dos incidentes ante la Policía de Guyana y la Comisión Constitucional de la Mujer y la
Igualdad de Género.
