SCOPE OF PUBLIC WORKS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ELECTRICAL INSPECTION ON ALL NEWLY BUILT HOMES

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 24, 2023 (SKNIS): Through the Electrical Inspection Division, the Public Works Department is tasked with carrying out electrical inspections of all newly built homes in St. Kitts and Nevis.

This was mentioned by the Director of the Public Works Department, George Gilbert during his May 24 appearance on “Infocus.” Director Gilbert said that although the Division is about 10 years old, many people are unaware of its function.

“Whenever there is a new property or house being built, before you get your permanent electrical connection, the inspectors would have to go out and pass your building. After this, the [St. Kitts Electricity Company] SKELEC would actually install the permanent meter,” said Director Gilbert.

He explained that an application must be sent to SKELEC who would then inform the Electrical Inspection Division.

“You would apply to SKELEC for your permanent connection after your house is completed and SKELEC will send the list of names and addresses [to us] and then the guys from Public Works will go out and inspect your house to make sure that the 110 and 220 – volts are [properly connected] and the lights are installed properly and in [working condition],” he said. “After the inspection, the approval will be given to SKELEC who will then install the permanent meter.”

Director Gilbert said that the aim is not to have SKELEC alone doing evaluations, hence one of the reasons why the Electrical Inspection Division was established.
