POST-CABINET BRIEFING FOR MONDAY, JULY 3
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, July 6, 2023 (SKNIS) The Cabinet Ministers met under the Chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister, The Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, on Monday, July 3rd, 2023, and made several important decisions to improve the welfare of our people.
Saint Kitts and Nevis Ambassador to the United States of America, Mrs Jacinth Henry-Martin paid a courtesy call on the Cabinet. Ambassador Henry-Martin informed the Cabinet of the vast opportunities and resources that the Washington D.C.-based embassy can provide to the Government and people of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Among the many areas of the work of the Embassy shared by Ambassador Henry-Martin were:
- The arrangement of high-level bilateral meetings with other countries;
- Networking opportunities with international agencies to assist line ministries in Saint Kitts and Nevis;
- Opportunities for agricultural, financial and climate resiliency assistance;
- Promotion of Saint Kitts and Nevis as a prime destination through cultural diplomacy; and
- The enhancement of engagement with the diaspora.
The Cabinet approved the purchase of a new track for and renovations of the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium, the premier track facility on Saint Kitts. This major track and field facility hosts both local and regional events, including the CARIFTA Games, as well as football and cricket matches and provides a fitness space for our people. The Ministry of Sport and the Creative Economy hopes to have the new track completed and ready for the track and field season in early 2024, and the anticipated resumption of regional and international competitions as well.
During this week, the Honourable Attorney-General Garth Wilkin is attending the 35th OECS Legal Affairs Committee Meeting in Saint Lucia. The OECS Legal Affairs Committee comprises all OECS Attorneys-General and Ministers of Legal Affairs who meet periodically to review OECS model legislation. The Bill for review at the 35th OECS Legal Affairs Committee Meeting is a draft Customs Bill.
