BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 18, 2024 – The St. Kitts and Nevis Inland Revenue Department, in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat, announces the launch of the Seventh COTA Essay Competition 2024 of February 19, 2024. This activity aims to promote understanding and interest in tax-related topics among people throughout the Caribbean region.

The competition targets youths aged 14 – 16, aiming to stimulate their awareness of the evolving landscape of tax administration, particularly amidst rapid global changes driven by technological advancements and the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic. With the theme, “How can Tax Administrators adapt to the challenges of the rapidly changing global environment?”, students are encouraged to explore innovative strategies and propose solutions to contemporary tax administration challenges.

Prizes for the competition include US$1,000.00 for the First Prize, US$700.00 for the Second Prize, and US$500.00 for the Third Prize.


Winning schools will also receive recognition for their support in nurturing young talents in the field of taxation.

Participants are invited to showcase their critical thinking and creativity by submitting essays of 1000 to 1200 words. Entries should be submitted to [email protected] and CC [email protected] by April 12, 2024. Essays shall be assessed based on the participants understanding of the tax structure, the quality of oneโ€™s arguments, and grammar. This competition provides a valuable platform for students to address real-world challenges in tax administration.

The competition is a collaborative effort involving the CARICOM Secretariat, Inland Revenue Department, and Ministry of Education to ensure broad participation. Schools in St. Kitts and Nevis are strongly encouraged to take part. We extend our gratitude to the Ministry of Education and participating schools for their support.

Initiatives like the COTA Essay Competition aim to instill a culture of tax awareness and excellence in essay writing among the youth, preparing them to become informed taxpayers and future leaders in both the private and public sectors.
