SIGNIFICANCE OF NURSING EMPOWERMENT AND WELL-BEING HIGHLIGHTED AT THE FIRST NURSES SYMPOSIUM

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 08, 2024 (SKNIS) – On a daily basis, nurses are called upon to serve, heal and provide care for countless patients across St. Kitts and Nevis. Today, Wednesday, May 08, 2024, greater attention was placed on nurses as the Ministry of Health underscores the importance of empowering and celebrating nurses who contribute to the well-being of the entire nation.

This was done through a nurses’ symposium held at the Customs and Excise Department’s Conference Room. The event was one of the activities organised as part of the celebrations for International Nurses Week, observed worldwide from May 06 -12, 2024.

The one-day symposium was held under the theme, “Empowering our Nurses: Shaping Our Future Through the Economic Power of Care”. Principal Nursing Officer, Dr. Rondalyn Dennis-Bradshaw said the theme resonates with the core values and aspirations of the noble profession.

She stated, “It acknowledges the pivotal role that nurses play in driving positive change and innovation within the healthcare system, while also recognising the economic impact of our compassionate care.”

The discussions during the symposium centred on enhancing clinical skills, fostering leadership development and financial wellness—all of which are integral to the holistic advancement of the nursing workforce.

Acting Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Health, Curtis Martin, delivered brief remarks on behalf of Prime Minister and Minister of Health the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew at Wednesday’s opening ceremony.

Acting PS Martin commented on the importance of empowering nurses throughout St. Kitts and Nevis, noting that it is not only a moral imperative but also an essential element for the future advancement of healthcare delivery.

“By nurturing nurses’ well-being, unleashing leadership potential, ensuring financial wellness and fostering emotional intelligence together, we can ensure a workforce that is resilient, empowered and capable of driving positive change,” he said.

The keynote address at Wednesday’s symposium was presented byVersilie Francis, Director of Fiscal Affairs and Policy Unit of the Ministry of Finance.

The wide-reaching event saw participation from a multi-faceted group representing the nursing fraternity including nurse educators, student nurses, retired nurses, community health workers, nursing attendants and nurse managers.
