Prime Minister Drew Urges Political Leaders to Put Country First in Social Security Reform Effort

Basseterre, Saint Kitts, April 22, 2026 (PMO) — Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew has issued a strong call for collective responsibility as the Federation advances critical discussions on Social Security reform, urging political leaders and stakeholders to approach the issue with maturity, objectivity, and a shared commitment to the national good.

Delivering remarks at the Social Security Reform Conference on April 21, Prime Minister Drew underscored that the future of Social Security cannot be compromised by partisan interests, but must instead be treated as a defining national priority requiring broad-based collaboration and consensus. He emphasized that the system, which has served as a cornerstone of social protection for decades, now stands at a pivotal moment that demands decisive and united action.

“I call on political parties. I call on political leaders to look at the data and information being presented and let us all decide to not allow Social Security to become a political football, but allow it to be a moment of solidarity for all of us to unite on,” the Prime Minister stated.

The Prime Minister reflected on the historical courage that led to the establishment of Social Security in St Kitts and Nevis, noting that meaningful reform today will require similar resolve. He pointed out that while previous leaders faced criticism when introducing transformative social policies, those decisions ultimately laid the foundation for a system that has provided stability, dignity, and protection for thousands of citizens.

Dr. Drew stressed that Social Security reform is not a political exercise, but a national imperative that transcends administrations and requires a unified approach rooted in shared responsibility. He urged stakeholders across government, labour, the private sector, and civil society to engage constructively, guided by evidence and a commitment to long-term sustainability.

“This is not a partisan exercise. Social Security reform must not be viewed through political lens. It is a national imperative. It transcends administrations, and it demands a unified approach grounded in shared responsibility and collective interest,” he affirmed.

The Prime Minister further highlighted that the decisions taken at this juncture will have lasting implications for current and future generations, making it essential for all parties to rise above short-term considerations. He reiterated that the goal is to preserve and strengthen the system so that it continues to provide reliable support for workers, pensioners, and the most vulnerable.

As discussions continue, Dr. Drew encouraged all participants and stakeholders to remain focused on the bigger picture, noting that unity and collaboration will be key to ensuring that Social Security remains a resilient and enduring pillar of national development.
