ONGOING “OPERATION MID SWEEP” NETS FIVE (5) ILLEGAL FIREARMS ON AUGUST FIFTH
Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 06, 2017 (RSCNPF): Five illegal firearms were seized by Officers of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force on Saturday (August 05) bringing the total number of illegal firearms seized to date in 2017 to thirty-five, one less than the total for 2016.
The first seizure on Saturday was as a result of the execution of a Search Warrant by the Special Services Unit (SSU) and the Anti-Drug Unit on a property in Greenlands. The officers discovered and seized, a Smith and Wesson .40 pistol and a .380 pistol both with several rounds of ammunition. That search was one several carried out as a result of a the discovery of twenty-nine dime bags of cocaine in a vehicle during a Stop and Search by members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force on the Southeast Peninsula earlier Saturday afternoon.
A subsequent search later Saturday evening of an abandoned property in Greenlands by officers of the Special Services Unit (SSU) and the Anti-Drug Unit resulted in the discovery and seizure of then additional three illegal firearms. Discovered and seized and were one (1) Mac 10 pistol, one (1) Glock .9mm pistol, and one (1) .357 Magnum revolver. Two hundred and twenty one (221) rounds of ammunition was also discovered and seized in this search.
“Today’s action by the Defence Force in executing a “Stop and Search” and through their demonstrated vigilance discovered a quantity of cocaine was the first step towards the success we see today. I commend them, and thank them for their partnership, and their action today underscores the significance of members of the Defence Force being conferred with powers pursuant to the proclamation that was issued in support of the Police,” said Commissioner of Police Mr. Ian M. Queeley.
He added,” I also want to commend our officers in the SSU and the Anti-Drug Unit, your attention to detail and leaving no space untouched during your search, resulted in the discovery of the two illegal firearms.” The Commissioner added, “good policing, and the resolve of your team resulted in an additional search of the surrounding areas and an abandoned house and it paid off with the discovery of three more illegal firearms and a large quantity of ammunition.”
“Today’s success highlights your demonstrated unwavering dedication to duty over the last weeks, working many hours as we increased our Operational Tempo and those efforts delivered. Today was also an indication, our efforts have paid off. I say well done, stay focused, be vigilant and remember Citizen Safety is Priority One.”
