SCORES OF CHILDREN TURN OUT TO FINE-TUNE SKILLS AT GENERAL SPORTS CAMP
Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 11, 2022 (SKNIS): Scores of children are spending the next five days learning a new sport or fine-tuning their skills in an existing one at the Department of Sports General Camp.
A brief opening ceremony was held today at the Warner Park football stadium to mark the start of the July 11 to 15 camp. The participants aged between 7 to 14 years are engaged in basketball, football, cricket, volleyball, tennis and golf.
Valencia Syder, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports welcomed the participants and congratulated them on their enthusiasm for sports.
“Sports make our life interesting, teach us to work hard and push our limits to reach a new high,” Syder said. “Sports teaches discipline, respect, friendship, leadership, resilience, teamwork and overcoming adversity. It is a crucial part of a student’s growth and development.”
The permanent secretary expressed that physical fitness is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, she indicated that there are many intangible lessons to be learned on the field or court that are applicable in personal life.
“It is therefore hoped that by the end of this week, you would have developed a deeper and more meaningful sense of self; sense of purpose; and a reminder that you can always get back up, dust yourself off and push on once again. In doing all of that, do not forget to have fun – laugh at yourself, laugh with others but never at them,” noted Ms. Syder.
Appreciation was extended to the donors, leadership, staff and coaches of the Department of Sport, and others who contributed to the success of the camp.
