Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, September 4, 2023 (Press Secretary, PMO)- The JNF General Hospital is celebrating a milestone, marking the anniversary of its Hemodialysis Unit. In honor of this significant occasion, the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis and the Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, have made a groundbreaking announcement that will greatly benefit patients in need of renal services.

Effective immediately, the cost of dialysis services at the JNF General Hospital will substantially reduce from EC$400.00 to EC$200.00. This decision reflects the Government’s commitment to providing accessible and affordable healthcare to its citizens and residents.

“This reduction of costs will bring much-needed financial relief to patients who rely on these vital services”, stated Minister Drew.

Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, expressed his enthusiasm for this change, stating, “We understand the challenges faced by individuals and families dealing with renal issues. By reducing the cost of dialysis services, we aim to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with chronic kidney disease. Our primary concern is the well-being of our people.”

The inception of the Hemodialysis Unit in 2013 was the result of the forward-thinking guidance of Her Excellency Dame Marcella Liburd, who served as the Minister of Health at that time, and the distinguished former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas. Building upon this legacy, the current Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, has taken it upon himself to not only uphold that vision but also to augment it. Earlier this year, he introduced state-of-the-art dialysis machines, and he is actively pursuing plans for the expansion of renal services within the Federation.

Under his leadership, the Ministry of Health is seeking to introduce renal transplant services at the JNF General Hospital, a crucial development that will significantly enhance the range of treatments available locally. This expansion underscores the Government’s commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare solutions within the country.

Dr. Drew added, “The introduction of renal transplant services is a significant step forward in our efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for our citizens. Patients will no longer need to seek these services abroad, reducing the emotional and financial burdens associated with overseas treatment.”

The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis remains dedicated to the well-being of its citizens and residents, continuously striving to improve healthcare access and services. Reducing dialysis costs and expanding renal services at the JNF General Hospital are important steps toward achieving these goals.
