Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.  16 January 2019. The last major regional outbreak of Dengue occurred in 2009. Since then, the Region has experienced two large outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, Chikungunya in 2014 and Zika in 2016, which are unlikely to reoccur soon. Disease modelling, however, predicts that another regional outbreak of Dengue may occur in the near future. In 2018, Latin America showed an increase in the number of Dengue cases. More recently, the outbreak of Dengue in Jamaica has elevated the level of concern in other Caribbean islands. The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is therefore advising countries to implement enhanced measures to reduce mosquito breeding and prevent the spread of disease.

LABOUR DEPARTMENT INSPECTIONS ENSURE WORKPLACES ARE SAFE FOR ALL

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 19, 2018 (SKNIS): Senior Minister the Honourable Vance Amory has assured employers and employees in St. Kitts and Nevis that the Ministry and the Department of Labour will remain proactive in ensuring that working environments across the Federation remain safe for all.

Senior Minister Amory, who also serves as the Minister of Labour, said that staff within the Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate Unit in the Department of Labour is charged with visiting workplaces in order to ensure that safety standards are observed and the conditions are healthy. This covers quite a number of measures such as mounting proper signs for exits and hazardous areas or materials, ensuring there are no dangling wires, guaranteeing that hallways are free of obstruction, and maintaining furniture in good condition.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 17, 2018 (SKNIS): Food security in St. Kitts and Nevis remains at the forefront of the Team Unity Administration’s agenda as the Ministry of Agriculture continues to provide farmers with the necessary tools and information to expand their production with the goal of ultimately reducing the Federation’s import bill.

While giving his address in support of The Appropriation (2019) Bill, 2018, on December 17, Minister of Agriculture, the Honourable Eugene Hamilton, said that the government in recognizing the effects of climate change has installed meteorological equipment throughout the Federation that will gather data and provide relevant information for farmers.
