CPA President highlights role of the Opposition in strengthening Parliamentary democracy

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 27^th 2017 – As the opposition in St. Kitts and Nevis accuses the Speaker of the St. Kitts and Nevis Hon. Michael Perkins of “stifling democracy” in the lawmaking body, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association has been highlighting the role of the Opposition in strengthening parliamentary democracy.

The CPA President and Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee, Hon. Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP, Speaker of the Parliament of  Bangladesh emphasised that if the Opposition plays a constructive and responsible role in the democratic process then the accountability of the government can be ensured.

The Chairperson was speaking as the chief guest at the CPA Roadshow for Young People on Parliamentary Democracy held at the North Plaza of the Bangladesh Parliament and hosted by the CPA Bangladesh Branch.

The CPA Chairperson said that the CPA Roadshows for Young People play a vital role in educating the youth of society about the parliamentary system of government and that she believes that the future leadership of the country lies with the youth.

75 delegates to attend 42^nd CPA Regional Conference in St. Kitts

LONDON, ENGLAND, May 27^th 2017 – As preparations are underway for the 42^nd Regional Conference of the Caribbean, the Americas and the Atlantic Region of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) to be held in St. Kitts next month, WICNews is reporting that 12 parliamentary speakers and 75 delegates will attend the meeting.

According to London-based WICNews the June 16^th to 24^th meeting is themed: “Enhancing Democracy through the Use of the Parliamentary System and the Media.”

The CPA “connects, develops, promotes and supports parliamentarians and their staff to identify benchmarks of good governance and the implementation of the enduring values of the Commonwealth.”

Akbar Khan, CPA Secretary General, is scheduled to attend the meeting with representations from 14 parliamentary branches.

MP Liburd concern over actions of PM Harris
to taint the judicial and parliamentary branches.

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 25th 2017 – Chairperson of the opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Hon. Marcella Liburd said Wednesday expressed concern over actions by Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris to erode democracy in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Liburd, who is also the Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher 2 (Central Basseterre), has warned of incidents of injustice not only in the Parliament but also in a level of the judiciary.
