Historic Citizenship Reform Approved for Second and Third Generation Kittitians and Nevisians

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, September 14, 2026 (SKNIS) — The Cabinet has approved the tabling in the National Assembly of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The Bill will allow adults born abroad on or after 19th September 1983, whose parent or grandparent became a citizen of Saint Christopher and Nevis at Independence, to apply to be registered as citizens.

The reform addresses a gap in the law that has stood for 43 years. Under the Constitution, citizenship passes to a child born abroad where a parent was born in Saint Kitts and Nevis. Adults born abroad in the generations that followed have had no route to citizenship based on their descent. Persons born before Independence stand in a different position, and are generally already citizens under the Constitution.

SKNOC HOSTS OLYMPIC VALUES EDUCATION PROGRAMME WORKSHOP

Basseterre, St. Kitts, Friday, September 11, 2026: The St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic
Committee (SKNOC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Sports,
Olympic Solidarity (Committee), and Panam Sports, is hosting a series of workshops under the
Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP).

The two-day workshop, being held from September 10–11 and facilitated by Ms. Silvia Dalotte,
Director of the Argentine Olympic Committee, aims to strengthen St. Kitts and Nevis’s national
sporting landscape by promoting excellence, supporting athletes and stakeholders, and advancing
Olympic values.

NINETEEN DESERVING FAMILIES RECEIVE KEYS TO NEW HOMES AS GOVERNMENT MOVES TO FULFIL HOUSING DEMAND

Basseterre, Saint Kitts, September 11, 2026 (SKNIS): Nineteen families are preparing to move into their new homes in Stapleton, St. Peter’s, following a key handover ceremony by the National Housing Corporation (NHC). The 16 two-bedroom homes and 3 one-bedroom homes were distributed at the ceremony on Thursday, September 10, 2026, turning the dreams of families in need of homes into a reality.

Jonelle Rawlins, NHC’s General Manager, said that the lands now occupied by the Stapleton Housing Project were once used by a few persons for small-scale farming. However, the incredible demand for housing by an expanding population, saw the peaceful relocation of the small farms to more suitable lands, paving the way for what is expected to become a vibrant and thriving community.
