LIQUOR LICENCE AMENDMENTS TO MAKE LICENCING EASIER FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

Basseterre, Saint Kitts, September 18, 2026 (SKNIS) – The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis is moving to make the liquor licensing process simpler, faster and more convenient for small businesses through amendments to the Liquor Licence Act.

Acting Prime Minister, Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, in presenting the Liquor Licence (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the National Assembly on September 18, 2026, said the amendments are designed to reduce unnecessary administrative burdens on business owners, particularly those operating bars, restaurants, hotels, shops and other small enterprises.

PAYMENT SYSTEMS AND SERVICES BILL, 2026, PASSED IN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

Basseterre, Saint Kitts, September 18, 2026 (SKNIS) – The National Assembly today, Friday, September 18, 2026, passed the Payment Systems and Services Bill, 2026, aimed at modernising the Federation’s legal and regulatory framework for payment systems and services.

While presenting the Bill, Acting Prime Minister, Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, said the legislation replaces the existing Payment System Act, Cap. 21.16, which predates mobile wallets, fintech platforms, electronic money and the digital payment services now widely used by consumers and businesses.

Historic Citizenship Reform Approved for Second and Third Generation Kittitians and Nevisians

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, September 14, 2026 (SKNIS) — The Cabinet has approved the tabling in the National Assembly of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The Bill will allow adults born abroad on or after 19th September 1983, whose parent or grandparent became a citizen of Saint Christopher and Nevis at Independence, to apply to be registered as citizens.

The reform addresses a gap in the law that has stood for 43 years. Under the Constitution, citizenship passes to a child born abroad where a parent was born in Saint Kitts and Nevis. Adults born abroad in the generations that followed have had no route to citizenship based on their descent. Persons born before Independence stand in a different position, and are generally already citizens under the Constitution.
