The 31-year-old native of St Kitts and resident of Virgin Gorda pleaded guilty to escaping lawful custody.

Dore’s attorney Valerie Stephens-Gordon told the court that her client only escaped because he was ‘scared for his life’.

The defence attorney however noted that she has informed Superintendent of Prisons David Foot about the reported ‘beatings’.

She said Superintendent Foot has promised to put measures in place to prevent any further incident.

According to Stephens-Gordon, Superintendent Foot also said he did not know about the alleged ‘beatings’.

Prison officer removes handcuff

The prosecution stated that, around 9:20am on April 29, Dore was transported from Her Majesty’s Prison on Tortola to the Magistrate’s Court on the island of Virgin Gorda.

After his court appearance, he was brought to the Virgin Gorda Police Station.

A police officer, as well as a prison officer, later escorted the offender to St Thomas Bay Jetty to board a ferry back to Tortola.

The two officers, along with Dore, were waiting in a parked vehicle for the ferry.

The prosecution reported that, while they waited, the prison officer removed the handcuffs from Dore, although the police officer had advised against such action.

Roughly five minutes later, Dore opened the vehicle door and said: “Boi Angie; I gone.”

He fled the area and remained on the run for days.

On May 1, Dore eventually showed up at the Virgin Gorda Police Station along with certain persons.

He told police during an interview that he was being beaten in prison, and he was afraid to return there.

Dore is scheduled to be sentenced this month.

Meanwhile, police reported late last year that Dore was held on a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

*Alert level raised with increased activity at Kick ‘em Jenny* _30-Apr-2017_

ST GEORGE’S – The National Disaster Management Agency is monitoring an increase in activities taking place at *Kick ‘em Jenny*, the region’s only submarine volcano located between Grenada and the Grenadine island of Carriacou.

In a release early Sunday, the disaster agency said it has been advised of the increase in activity by the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI). “The UWI/SRC recorded a high amplitude signal, lasting about 25 seconds, on one of the Grenada stations.  The signal was also recorded on a station in Montserrat.  This signal follows an increase in the number of background events associated with the *Kick-‘em-Jenny volcano*,” said the release which confirmed that persons in the St Patrick’s area have reported feeling tremors.” As a result, the alert level is now on yellow and sea users and ships have been warned to stay away from vicinity of the submarine volcano.

In light of the ongoing we are advising all sea users that the 5km (3.1 miles) exclusion zone of *Kick ‘em Jenny* be strictly observed. The SRC has advised that heightened alert is necessary for the exclusion zone,” the release added. A yellow alert means the volcano is restless; seismicity and/or fumarolic activity are above the historical level or other unusual activity has been observed or can be expected without warning. *(CMC)*

ST.LUCIA: Alleged gunman disarmed and severely beaten in Babonneau

By SNO Staff

18015836_10209015615539821_1777363642_oA suspected gunman, who was allegedly disarmed by citizens and severely beaten during an attempted robbery at a shop in Girard, Cacao, Babonneau early Sunday morning, is now in serious condition at hospital, according to reliable sources.

Reports are that after 1 a.m. Sunday, a masked male, dressed in all black, and carrying a gun, entered Lenny and Company liquor and grocery shop in the small rural community, demanded everyone to “pass it”  as well as taking some rum.

At the time, there were about six persons in the shop, some of whom were playing a card game.

But little did the suspect knew that this Easter was not going to be a rewarding one. The persons in the shop, including the owner fought and overpowered him. He was disarmed, beaten, stripped naked and beaten again, and again.

It is alleged that a “red car” that was observed dropping him off at the location earlier, drove off after he was overpowered by the persons in the shop.

17949855_10209015615779827_351694760_oA relative of the shop owner, who prefers to remain anonymous, told St. Lucia News Online that the business community has been suffering because of a number of armed robberies.

“We want the public to know because that is not the first time they are coming and rob people in the area,” she said. “Because we have a lady higher up the road, she has a shop. And the lady willing to close her shop because they robbed her once last year and two  times for the year already, at gunpoint and with mask.”

This time the citizens fought back and won.

“So he came in, he burst a shot, and he ask them to ‘pass it’, he asked my uncle to ‘pass it’ so my uncle moved fast and think fast,” the relative explained. “So he tell him he don’t have money … he (the gunman) end up going on the other side where the fellas gambling, then my uncle rush outside and close the door and prevented him from going outside. And that’s how my uncle was able to take the gun from him and then they start giving him licks.”

By the time the suspect was handed over to the police, he was bleeding profusely and required immediate attention.

“The people in the area made him talk,” the relative noted.

The Babonneau Police Station confirmed that the suspect is in police custody at the hospital in “serious condition”. The matter is under investigation.

It is not yet clear if the firearm was handed over to the police.
