Another first, as historic cruise ship arrivals boost tourism activity

For the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began in March 2020, three cruise vessels were docked at St John’s Harbour yesterday.

Cruise tourism officials held a plaque exchange ceremony to welcome the Sky Princess on its maiden voyage to Antigua and Barbuda, and the Silver Whisper which has added the twin island nation to its itinerary since its return to Caribbean waters. The third vessel which spent Sunday in the port is the British vessel Britannia.

PM to ask the UK for Covid antiviral pills

Prime Minister Gaston Browne will write to the UK government today asking Britain to earmark a portion of the Merck Covid-19 antiviral pills for Caricom countries.

Britain granted conditional authorisation last Thursday for the world’s first pill designed to treat symptomatic Covid-19.

The global death toll from COVID-19 topped 5 million on Monday, less than two years into a crisis that has not only devastated poor countries but also humbled wealthy ones with first-rate health care systems.

Together, the United States, the European Union, Britain and Brazil — all upper-middle- or high-income countries — account for one-eighth of the world’s population but nearly half of all reported deaths. The US alone has recorded over 740,000 lives lost, more than any other nation.

In St. Kitts, Reach for Recovery SKB Breast Cancer Support Group offers assistance to those in need year-round while using the month of October to further awareness efforts with the hosting of activities synonymous with the group.
