A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Saint Lucia

At 2:00 p.m. Today, the center of tropical depression fifteen was centered near latitude 11.9 north, longitude 51.6 west or 695 miles or 1120 km east southeast of the Lesser Antilles. The depression is moving toward the west near 20 mph or 30 km/h. A slower west-northwest motion is expected during the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the system is expected to approach the Leeward Islands on Monday.

Irma costing LIAT millions

Chief executive officer Julie Reifer-Jones yesterday revealed that the regional airline’s current inability to operate commercial flights in and out of St Maarten and Tortola meant it was likely to lose about $4.4 million (EC$6 million) between now and the end of the year.

16 guns, 593 rounds of ammunition seized in 24 hours

Members of the Royal Barbados Police Force, have seized 16 firearms and 593 rounds of assorted ammunition, in four separate operations conducted during the last 24 hours.

During one of these operations, over 400 rounds of ammunition and six firearms were seized at the Bridgetown Port as a result of an intelligence-led operation involving Customs enforcement officers, and members of the Anti-Gun Unit.
A number of people are currently assisting police in their investigations. (PR/NB)

St. Martin/St. Maarten reportedly on verge of ‘civil war’ after Irma

Citizens and some news sources are reporting that the island of St Martin/St Maarten is on the verge of a civil war as organized gangs armed with machetes raid stores and homes, leaving some residents in fear for their lives.
The island, which remains isolated after widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Irma, remains cut off after the island’s main airport was significantly damaged.

 
Video footage of one resident went viral on Sunday after she hinted that there are more deaths than the media is reporting. She begged for residents to be evacuated from the violence and looting.
