Decentralisation of Prime Minister’s activities brings Team Unity Government closer to the people
BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, September 12, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — The decentralisation of Prime Minister’s activities through Prime Minister’s one-on-one consultations with constituents in the various constituencies is an avenue the Dr Harris-led Team Unity Administration is pursuing to ensure it is a government that is always rooted in the people.
Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, who is also the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), made the observation on Wednesday September 11 after highly successful Prime Minister’s one-on-one consultations with the people of West Basseterre that were held in the office of Team Unity’s Caretaker for St. Christopher Three (West Basseterre) Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett.
A large number of citizens and residents from all areas of West Basseterre, and even from outside the constituency, thronged the office of Senator Byron-Nisbett who is also the Deputy National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party. The number was quite overwhelming, and the Prime Minister promised those who were not able to see him that he would schedule time to meet with them. The office, at CMR Building in Lime Kiln Commercial Development, also serves as PLP Constituency Number Three Branch office.
“There were a number of persons who time did not allow us to engage in a fulsome way, and I have committed that I will set a new schedule to meet with them,” said Prime Minister Harris, even as he thanked them for turning up to share their concerns. “So the dialogue will continue, because we want to be a government that is always rooted in the people, and responsive to their particular needs.”
Prime Minister Harris said he was very happy that Senator Byron-Nisbett had afforded him that opportunity to come into her constituency to make himself available to a broader cross-section of persons that would otherwise not have the opportunity to meet with him in his constituency (St. Christopher Seven) or even to meet him at the office of the Prime Minister.
“The decentralisation therefore of the activities of the Prime Minister is an important one,” pointed out Prime Minister Harris. “I intend to do this, not just in Number Three, but in other areas of the country particularly where the elected representatives are not those on the government side so that those constituents who have been requiring more serious representation would know that the government is fully committed to be of service and we want to hear from them.”
In conclusion Prime Minister Harris said: “We want to engage them so that we can do a better job at improving their lives, and improving the country for all who are our citizens and all who reside here.”
In the meantime Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett observed that it was such a pleasure having the Prime Minister come to do a one-on-one with the people of West Basseterre, and added that she was thankful to the people of West Basseterre who came out in such numbers, to share with the Prime Minister their concerns on how they think West Basseterre can be further developed and the things that they are looking forward to for West Basseterre in the future.
“The Prime Minister understands the importance of being able to reach out to the constituents and reach out to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said the Hon Byron-Nisbett. “It was a promise that was made by Team Unity that they will be there for each and every individual and each and every citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis and he has shown and proven that indeed he is the Prime Minister for the entire Federation, and being here today was an example of that.”
She thanked Prime Minister Harris for leaving his own constituency Number Seven to come in Constituency Number Three to ensure that the people of Number Three also have the representation that they would desire from him. For those people who were not able to meet with the Prime Minister, she reminded them that he had said that he would get them a scheduled time to come to see him.
