PRIME MINISTER HARRIS COMMENDS ALL AS ST. KITTS AND NEVIS REACHES TWO MILESTONES IN ITS VACCINATION PROGRAMME

PRIME MINISTER HARRIS COMMENDS ALL AS ST. KITTS AND NEVIS REACHES TWO MILESTONES IN ITS VACCINATION PROGRAMME

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 26, 2021 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris described Tuesday (May 25) as a ‘red letter day’ in the twin island Federation, as the country achieved two significant milestones in its vaccination programme. 

More than 1,000 doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine were administered on Tuesday – the most ever in a single day. Also, St. Kitts and Nevis has now surpassed the 50 percent vaccination mark of the Government’s target population.

Atthe end of day yesterday (May 25), a total of 23,340 doses of the vaccine were administered in St. Kitts and Nevis, representing some 51.6 percent of the Government’s target population of 33, 037 persons, who would make up the 70 percent required for herd immunity. 

Tuesday, May 25, also saw the largest number of doses administered on a single day in the Federation. 

“I’m advised that today [Tuesday, May 25], we administered 1,062 doses. This is again the largest number of doses that has been administered since we started the roll out of the programme and I want to say that this effort was a collective effort across the twin islands of St. Kitts and Nevis and all 17 health centers participated in this exercise,” Prime Minister Harris said on the Tuesday, May 25 edition of Leadership Matters. 

Ofthe 1,062 persons who took the vaccine on Tuesday, 725 were administered their first dose while the other 337 received their second jab. 

Theprime minister said, “This then is an excellent performance and in fact should give all of us who are taking part in this battle against COVID-19 inspiration that all is not lost.” 

“For me it is words of congratulations to the health team, the broader Task Force and beyond then the all-of-society team that have been working very hard really to defeat the pandemic, to get our country back to work again, to bring back more jobs and better incomes and better opportunities for all of our people,” Dr. Harris continued. 

St. Kitts and Nevis rolled out its vaccination programme on February 22, 2021, after it received its first batch of 2,000 vaccines courtesy the Government of Dominica. 

Thenon March 01, the Federation was gifted 20,000 doses of the vaccine from the Government of India. A final batch of 21,600 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine was then received by the Government as a result of the Federation’s participation in the COVAX Facility.
