Stakeholder Consultation

Thursday 6 October 2022, the Ministry of International Trade et al continued its public-private sector dialogue with representers from the wholesale sector/importers, manufacturers and other stakeholders.

Some of the main issues discussed were St.Kitts and Nevis obligations within the various trading arrangements with a special focus on CARICOM Regime. 

Presentations were made on the function of the Common External Tariff ( CET) and the role of Council of Trade and Development ( COTED) . Information on the CIMSUPO which is an online portal that was approved by CARICOM Trade Ministers to promote intraregional trade.  The Ministry made the call for support of the region’s products to allow for the growth of local industries and to encourage investment. This sparked some lively discussions with participants, some of whom articulated some of the challenges faced as importers including logistics,  transportation cost, inflation rates among other challenges.  

The meeting was advised of the Ministry’s thrust to boost the Industry and Manufacturing Sectors and participants were encouraged to share their input on the best way forward. At the meeting, Manufacturers shared their own experience as well and were optimistic about the future of the sector. The role of the Department of Consumer Affairs in Consumer Education was also highlighted and ideas from participants were well received. 

Presenters at this forum were Permanent Secretary Mrs. Jasemin Weekes who also chaired the proceedings, Mr Sean Lawrence – Director of Trade, Mr Paul Queeley -Director Consumer Affairs and Mr Kennedy De Silva Coordinator at the Ministry of International Trade. Ms Launlia Archibald Deputy Comptroller also lent her expertise and knowledge to the discussions in particular on the issues that are currently being addressed at the COTED level relating to the CET. 

The discussions were very fruitful and follow-up action will be taken. The meeting was held at the Training Centre at Customs and Excise, Bird Rock and was deemed a success.
