Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis Announces Official Funeral for the Late Honourable Hugh C. Heyliger
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has announced that the late Honourable Hugh C. Heyliger, former Deputy Prime Minister, will be accorded an Official Funeral in recognition of his distinguished service to the nation. The Official Funeral is a formal state-assisted public event typically reserved for individuals of profound national importance, including serving or former Premiers, Government Ministers, Parliamentarians and those who have made significant contributions to the development of the Federation.
Mr. Heyliger, a native of the town of Sandy Point and a dedicated public servant, passed away at his home at the age of 80. A trained economist and educator, he served as Director of the Government Planning Unit from 1980 to 1984, Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Housing and Development from 1989 and was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education in November 1994. Following the 1995 general elections, he served as Leader of the Opposition until 2000.
Beyond politics, Mr. Heyliger continued to contribute to nation building as Director of Institutional Development at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. He was also a Lay Pastor in the Methodist Church, where his sermons inspired reflection and challenged listeners to pursue a higher purpose.
In honour of Mr. Heyliger’s legacy, the Government has declared a three-day period of mourning, which will be observed from Tuesday July 7 through Thursday July 9, 2026. During this time, all flags on government buildings and official residences are to be flown at half-mast across the Federation as a mark of respect.
The Official Funeral service is scheduled for Thursday July 9, 2026 at the Wesley Methodist Church, Seaton Street, Basseterre. Viewing and tributes will commence at 1:00 p.m., followed by the formal service at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the service, a period of Lying-in-State will be held at Government Headquarters from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the same day, allowing members of the public to pay their final respects. An Official Condolence Book will also be available for signing during this time. Citizens and residents from all walks of life are invited to join in honouring the memory of a true son of the soil.
The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis extends its deepest condolences to the Heyliger family. May he rest in eternal peace.
