GOVERNMENT STANDS BY ITS DECISION TO BUILD THE NEWSTATE-OF-THE-ART BHS AT POND’S EXTENSION IN EAST BASSETERRE
 Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 21, 2018 (SKNIS): Minister of Education, the Honourable Shawn Richards, during a recent sitting of Parliament on December 13, said that according to a map provided by the Physical Department there are many developed areas sitting on the Basseterre Valley Aquifer where the new Basseterre High School (BHS) is to be built. The aquifer spans approximately 5230 acres.

“When you look at it (the map), the whole of Newtown is on the aquifer, Bird Rock is on the aquifer, here [Government Headquarters] is on the aquifer, St. Peter’s is on the aquifer, the Village is on the aquifer. All of these areas are on the aquifer. The water flows from those areas to where they have the wells,” he said. The minister added that when water flows, whether it is from rain or otherwise, the water will seep through the earth into the aquifer.

NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART BHS LAUDED AS ONE OF THE MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY
Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 12, 2018 (SKNIS): The imminent construction of the new state-of-the-art Basseterre High School (BHS) is one of the Government of National Unity’s major accomplishments, said Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris during his 2019 Budget Address on December 12.

A major achievement by the Government of National Unity was to solve the ongoing problems associated with the BHS at its former compound in East Basseterre, which “became a health hazard causing physical and emotional harm to students and teachers at the school,” said the prime minister.

FORMER BASSETERRE HIGH SCHOOL (BHS) ALSO SITS ON BASSETERRE VALLEY AQUIFER
Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 12, 2018 (SKNIS): The former Basseterre High School (BHS), located at Victoria Road, Basseterre, sits on the Basseterre Valley Aquifer. The soon to be built state-of-the-art BHS at Pond’s Extension in East Basseterre will also be built on the Basseterre Valley Aquifer. So, what is the controversy?

Some claim that the Basseterre Valley Aquifer will be contaminated by the building of the new BHS on it, while respected experts in the field, including a group of top experienced water engineers, who did the feasibility studies, say that the water contamination risk is literally non-existent.

ST. KITTS AND NEVIS LOOKS TO ATTRACT ADDITIONAL INTERNATIONALLY ACCREDITED TERTIARY LEVEL INSTITUTIONS

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 4, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is targeting tertiary-level education to play a key role in the expansion plan for the Federation’s economy going forward, says Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.

“We are open to welcoming more schools of learning, more participants in the purveying of quality education in St. Kitts and Nevis,” Prime Minister Harris said, while delivering remarks during a November 29 breakfast meeting hosted by Adtalem Global Education Inc, the parent company of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM).

RUSVM has been based in St. Kitts since 1983. Since then, it has graduated roughly 5,000 veterinarians who work around the world.
