CHARLES A. HALBERT PUBLIC LIBRARY AWARDS THREE OUTSTANDING READERS IN READ-A-THON COMPETITION

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 30, 2017 (SKNIS): Three students were recognized on May 30 for their demonstration of excellent reading skills during the annual Charles A. Halbert Public Library Read-a-thon.

The competition saw 41 students vying for the title of most outstanding reader in which Daniel Thompson won in the senior division, Josiah Davis in the junior, while Aarya Mungli was the second overall winner.

The children of Charles A. Halbert and the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Tapley Seaton, were present to distribute the prizes to the winners.

The Department of Environment is looking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Consultant for a period of four months from June 01- September 30. The successful candidate will be working on a Mid Term Review for the Project “Advancing the Nagoya Protocol in countries of the Caribbean region including Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Republic of Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis, Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.

The Mid-Term Review will use a participatory approach whereby key stakeholders are kept informed and consulted throughout the review process.

Applicants should have an advanced university degree in environmental sciences, international development or other relevant political or social sciences area; a minimum of five years of technical / evaluation experience, including of evaluating large, regional or global programmes and using a Theory of Change approach; a broad understanding of access and benefit sharing in the context of the Nagoya Protocol; a Pproficiency in time management along with excellent writing skills in English; a team leadership experience and, where possible, knowledge of the United Nations (UN) system, specifically of the work of UN Environment.

Government mum on plans by LIAT to stop flying to St. Thomas.

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – May 30th 2017 – Three months after the announcement that LIAT – the Caribbean Airline – will stop flying between St. Kitts and Nevis and the United States Virgin Islands, there has been no statement from the Team Unity Government.

Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, Tourism Minister Hon. Lindsay Grant and Minister of Aviation, Hon, Mark Brantley have been completely silent on the measures they intend to take to provide easier access for nationals and visitors between both destinations.

IMMIGRATION ACT AMENDED TO GIVE WAY TO THE ADVANCE PASSENGER INFORMATION BILL

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 24, 2017 (SKNIS): The Immigration Amendment Bill 2017 was read a third time and passed into law on Tuesday, May 23, during the Sitting of Parliament, with the object to amend the Immigration Act Chapter 6.02 and for matters connected therewith.

“It is a matter of replacing the provisions which hitherto relate to Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) and to give notice to the fact that we have just brought an Act which stands on its own in relation to the administration of APIS requirements,” said Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.

Deputy Premier of Nevis and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation in the Federal Government, the Honourable Mark Brantley, said that the amendment to the Immigration Act was to “tidy up the legislative framework” and to be granted permission “to bring into force and to have and give efficacy to the APIS legislation.”

TECOYA WARNER EMERGES AS JUNIOR TOURISM MINISTER

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 25, 2017 (SKNIS): Tecoya Warner of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School emerged victorious at this year’s Local Tourism Youth Congress, which was aimed at creating greater awareness among youth about the island’s tourism product, while presenting solutions about how it can be improved.

The now 2017 Junior Tourism Minister, who will go on to represent St. Kitts at the Regional Tourism Youth Congress in October, 2017, in Grenada, was passionate about her topic, gave sound points and captured attention, just to name a few, according to the judges.

In second place was Treasure Cannonier of the Cayon High School and in third, Sheski Christian of Saddlers Secondary.

Having young persons put forth their views on tourism topics and express themselves convincingly on matters of concerns to the country as a tourism destination is vital to the future development of tourism, says Minister of Tourism, Honourable Lindsay Grant.
