Restaurant Week Mystery Ingredient Revealed: YAM

BASSETERRE (30TH March, 2017): The buzz for the St. Kitts-Nevis Restaurant Week 2017 has begun, with the announcement that yams will be this year’s theme ingredient.

Now in its third year, Restaurant Week highlights the rich culinary culture of St. Kitts-Nevis.  Special menus with exquisite selected dishes, fixed price dinner menus, and lunch time specials at reduced prices, are showcased from the 19th to 30th July, 2017

Restaurants will prepare special dishes with yams, which is showcased throughout Restaurant Week.  In 2015 the theme ingredient was the local breadfruit, and in 2016 it was the local pumpkin. These ingredient are chosen to support local farmers, by raising demand for the commodities.

Minister of Tourism, The Hon. Lindsay F.P. Grant, said Restaurant Week afforded the destination the opportunity for visitors and locals to revel in a uniquely Kittitian and Nevisian experience – a love of good food, enjoyed with great friends and family.

“Restaurant Week is indeed a celebration of our culinary culture, while at the same time promoting the sourcing of locally grown ingredients ” Minister Grant said. “Whether you’re looking for a local feast, such as goat water and saltfish, or five star dinning experience; St. Kitts and Nevis can satisfy your every craving.”

St. Kitts & Nevis offers a rich culinary culture, fused with island ingenuity and ‘old world’ traditions. Passionate chefs create cuisine that shines with fresh-off-the-boat seafood and island-grown produce while restaurateurs dream up ever more magical settings to enjoy it all.

Wanted Man Captured, Police Want Another Young Man

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); After issuing a wanted person bulletin for 33-year-old Shane Amory of New Road on Friday afternoon (Mar 31), saying that a warrant was in existence for his arrest, police informed later that same evening that he had been taken into custody.

WINN FM understands Amory was arrested at his home without incident. He was charged with the March 21 building breaking and larceny at Boozies bar on the Frigate Bay Strip. Diondre Browne of New Road was also charged with building breaking and larceny for the same incident

Police have issued another wanted person bulletin, this time for Calvin Archibald, known as Cal. Archibald is known to reside at Upper Cayon and Sandy Point.

Police described Archibald as a “person of interest” who should be considered armed and dangerous.

Man Charged With Sexual Assaults In West Farm, Camps

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); Police have formally charged the person taken into custody for the burglaries and sexual assaults reported in the West Farm and Camps areas two weeks prior.

According to police the man was charged with two counts of Burglary and two counts of a sexual offence in relation to the March 13 incidents.

Police have not released the individual’s name in accordance with the law as it relates to offences that are sexual in nature.

The Police High Command has praised the investigators and forensic team for the charges being brought, saying it was a result of good investigative work and forensics analysis.

Coming out of the local courts, a number of persons were granted bail for various criminal charges.

Dion Paul of Cayon who was charged with Possession of Cannabis was granted bail in the sum of $5000, and Glenford Percival of New Road who was charged with Possession of Cannabis and Possession of Cannabis with Intent to Supply was also granted bail in the sum of $5000. Both are to return to court on May 8th.

Ziron Battice of West Street, Newtown who was charged with the offence of Inflicting Grievous Bodily Harm, was granted bailed in the sum of $25,000.

The young man also has to report to the Basseterre Police Station every Monday and Friday and to have no contact with the virtual complainant.

WINN FM understands Battice was arrested and charged after he viciously beat a female who had an altercation with his girlfriend on March 22nd.

In matters at the Dieppe Bay Magistrate Court Glenroy Henderson of Wingfield Road, Old Road who was charged for wounding, was found guilty and fined $3000 to be paid by April 27, or in default serve one month in prison.

Man Injured In Bath Village Shooting

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); RSCNPF Press Release:  Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) are investigating a shooting incident in Bath Village, Nevis that has resulted in injuries to one person.

The shooting occurred about 8.00pm on Saturday  (April 01).

Investigations revealed that the victim received a gunshot injury to his leg while in an altercation with two unknown assailants. He was transported to the Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

Anyone who may have seen the incident is asked to come forward and provide any information they may have to the Police.

Nevis Agriculture Minister Urges Greater Consumption Of Local Produce

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (March 31, 2017) — Minister of Agriculture on Nevis Hon. Alexis Jeffers, reiterated the importance of consuming locally produced food and urged the public to consume more.

 
“Remember to eat what you grow and grow what you eat,” he said, “let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.”
 
Mr. Jeffers, said the Nevis Island Administration continues to through its full support being the agriculture sector on the island as it continued to work towards greater food security. So far the move has brought about sustained success in agriculture.
 
The Minister made the remarks when he delivered an address at the opening ceremony of the 23rd Annual Agriculture Open Day opening ceremony at the Villa Grounds in Charlestown on March 30, 2017. The theme is “Embrace climate smart agriculture to achieve greater food security.”
 
He said the increases in crop, livestock, plant and fisheries production, echoes the vision and thrust of the Ministry and Department of Agriculture which is reflected in the theme.
 
The Agriculture Minister said the holistic and strategic approach taken by the Nevis Island Administration, to ensure the survival of agriculture, stimulate trade and promote healthy lifestyles has resulted in the increases.  
 
He explained that among the priority areas have been the reintroduction of onion production, increased production of cassava, sweet potatoes, coloured peppers, pumpkin and melons among others.
 
Other initiatives include the re-cultivation of coconut trees at New River, the establishment of commercial green houses, increased efforts to reduce the monkey population, intensify support to the livestock industry, upgrading the government-owned Abattoir and veterinary clinic and working with primary schools to establish back yard gardens.
 
In the area of agro processing, they have ensured that the Agro Processing Unit is provided with sufficient agricultural produce. He announced that a mango pulping machine had been sourced to deal with the excess mangoes on the island.
 
The Agriculture Minister said consultation with farmers, livestock owners, fisher folk and others involved in agriculture continues on a regular basis, since their input must be what guides agricultural policies going forward.
 
He also acknowledged a number of allied partners who continue to assist the Administration with training opportunities namely – the Inter American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Food and Agriculture Organization (OAS), the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Caribbean Research and Development Institute (CARDI).
