Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 06, 2017 (SKNIS): The opening of the new second high court at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial Complex in Basseterre, St. Kitts, which will help to expedite the dispensation of justice, has seen the appointment of a second judge to serve the St. Kitts Circuit – the Honourable Justice Pearletta Lanns, a daughter of the soil.

At his (Wednesday, April 8) monthly press conference, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris welcomed Justice Lanns, when reiterating the government’s promise of having a second high court, which “goes to the heart of law and order and our democracy.” Dr. Harris said that such an initiative forms part of the government’s good governance agenda which promotes transparency and accountability.

“We have now delivered on both, and for this I want to thank the Chief Justice of the [Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court], the Honourable Dame Janice Pereira for working with us to ensure that we can deliver this so soon in 2017,” said Dr. Harris. “The second high court is now served by the Hon. Justice Pearletta Lanns who hails from the Federation. We welcome her and we wish her well in this high office. We will now have continuous sittings relating to criminal matters all year long and, similarly, we will have continuous hearings of civil matters.”

Prime Minister Harris said that the opening of the second high court and the appointment of a new judge will speed up the workings of the justice system.

“This should lead to a significant diminution in the backlog of cases. Justice, then, will be more swiftly obtained in St. Kitts and Nevis and this is good for the country. It is good for business, it is good for citizens that the long delays [will no longer be] part of our judicial system. Justice delayed, justice denied,” he said.

In 1985, Justice Lanns, on completion of her library degree, attended the University of the West Indies University Centre in St. Kitts and joined the Challenge Programme, which had offered a first year Law LLB of the degree programme. She later obtained her legal education certificate in 1995 from the Sir Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago and was admitted to the Bar in the Federation that same year.

Justice Lanns has served as Crown Counsel, Registrar of Companies, Registrar of the High Court, Provost Marshall, Additional Magistrate, Deputy Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Registrar of Lands and Deeds, Registrar of Probate and Registrar of Intellectual Property. Justice Pearletta Lanns was appointed to the post of Master of the Supreme Court in 2007. She was the first female in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis to be appointed to the position.

ST. Thomas’ Primary Does It Again As INTERPRIMARY CHAMPIONS

http://www.nevispages.com/st-thomas-primary-does-it-again-as-interprimary-champions/ #

Published 6 April, 2017

The cracking sounds of fireworks, filled the air and for a moment, the atmosphere at the ET Willet Park, was reflected in the brightly lit sky.

The huge crowd, which originally included such dignitaries as Prime Minister Timothy Harris and Premier Vance Amory, after being initially taken aback by the pleasant surprise, soon warmed to the occasion in spontaneous applause.

It was Wednesday 5th April, the much anticipated day of the annual Interprimary schools’ track meet, on Nevis-otherwise known as the MINI-OLYMPICS. It was held under the distinguished patronage of former Olympic sprint queen, Meritzer Williams, who was immaculately attired and made a fashion statement of her own.

The grand announcement as to the 2017 winners of the competition, had just been made. It was revealed that St. Thomas’ Primary school had successfully defended its championship honours, it had secured in 2016.

Their fan base erupted into huge celebrations.

As per usual, hundreds of individuals crammed into the ETW and there were even several boat loads coming over from St. Kitts.

However, the ultimate stars of the day, were the athletes. They came out to excel and to entertain and that is exactly what they did.

They competed in the 800 meters; 200; 400; 1200; 60; 100; 4X100 and 4X400 meters events and on several occasions, the photo finish experts had to be called to adjudicate.

The athletes appeared to be well oiled and well-tuned and definitely came out to give it their all.

Of course, there were some athletes who stood out more than others and for that very reason, the medals were shared around nicely. The two least populated schools in St. James’ and VOJN, collected gold medals as well and that would have served to stagger some of the points away from some of the more populated schools.

At one point, the St. Thomas’ Primary school was so well challenged by the Ivor Walters Primary, that they were tied on points. However, critically, St. Thomas’ came out a lot better in the 100 meter events and the 4X400 relay events, and that was the ultimate decider.

Soon it was The Ivor Walters team, attempting to tug away from the Jocelyn Liburd Primary school, for second place and the Jocelyn Liburd Primary prevailed in the end, to beat them by a mere two points.

Immediately after the meet, the medal presentation ceremony was held and the top athletes received their medals. However, it was announced that the individual champion trophies will be presented at the respective schools on Thursday and that the announcement of the Victor and Victrix Ludorum, will be revealed in the not too distant future.

The revelation of the top schools, was also made:

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 14, 2017 (SKNIS): The Ministry of Culture has thrown its support behind the 2016-2017 Power Soca Monarch LAX, as he seeks to capture the crown at the upcoming OECS Soca Competition to be held in Montserrat this Friday, March 17.

A cheque of $6,500 was presented to the young man on Monday (March 13) by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Culture and National Carnival, Honourable Shawn Richards to assist with his participation in the regional competition, which is in its second year.

Deputy Prime Minister Richards wished LAX, whose legal name is Jarez Liburd, the best of luck and encouraged him to make the most of the experience as he will be facing off against the best from the region.

“Use it as an opportunity to see [the] different ways you can better your own craft. Use it as an opportunity to come back to St. Kitts and Nevis and be more energized and willing to spread the soca artform not just here, but elsewhere within the region and beyond,” he said.

The handing over ceremony was witnessed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Stanley Knight; Director of Culture, Troy Mills; and the Chairman of the National Carnival Committee, Noah Mills. Chairman Mills thanked the Minister of Culture for the continued support of the carnival winners to participate in regional competitions. He noted that in 2016, the committee was successful in sending nine representatives to participate in regional pageants, calypso and soca competitions. Four of those representatives returned with the crown.

Director of Culture, Troy Mills, shared words of encouragement to LAX and said there may be hidden opportunities.

“I am encouraging you to use the opportunity to really network with not only the artists but perhaps producers, who may very well be there, scouts as it were because they are coming and looking for new talent. They don’t just want to hear about the Machel Montanas and the Destras. They want new untouched talent,” he stated, adding that the popularity of soca has really taken off around the Caribbean.

LAX is expected to perform two songs, “Jackhammer” and “Big Truck” featuring KT aka Jason Kyte.

Director Mills told the young men that they are an inspiration to many persons and that they had the full support of the Department of Culture as they are cultural ambassadors.

LAX was grateful for the words of encouragement and the financial support.

“It’s a good experience for me where I can go out, spread St. Kitts-Nevis music, do collaborations and move forward,”  Liburd said, sharing the vision mentioned by Director Mills. He promised the government officials and his fans that the duo would represent the country well.
