STATEMENT BY ACTING PRIME MINISTER, HON. LENARD MONTOUTE ON TROPICAL STORM MARIA


17 September 2017 – A Tropical Storm warning was issued for Saint Lucia at 11:00 AM on Sunday.
Tropical Storm Maria is expected to affect Saint Lucia and the Lesser Antilles from Sunday night.
In accordance with the guidelines for a national systematic shutdown and having consulted the MET Office, NEMO, the Ministry of Education and the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, I have ordered that all schools, businesses and government offices be closed on Monday, September 18, 2017 and remain closed until the ALL CLEAR is given.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for hurricane Maria in St. Kitts.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for hurricane Maria in St. Kitts. Current storm track is to the south of St. Kitts, and expected to be a hurricane Category 3 hurricane by late Tuesday. Tropical storm force winds expected in St. Kitts by mid-Tuesday morning with hurricane force winds in the afternoon. Winds estimated at 75 MPH with gusts to 100MPH, and rainfall is expected in the 4-8″ range. Please also be aware that there is still debris from hurricane Irma, please exercise caution as we experience high winds.

Please note that Maria is forecast to pass to the south of St. Kitts and Nevis within the next 36 to 48 hours.

Be reminded that the strongest winds tend to be in the northern quadrant of a hurricane.

The southern quadrant of Irma passed over SKN but this time we will be impacted by the northern quadrant of this Hurricane Maria which is only passing 50 miles to the south of us.

The Nevis Culture Village was full to its capacity on Friday night as thousands showed up for the second wet fete.

Patrons were treated to exciting performances by the Kollision Band, the Nu Vibes Band, the Kore Band, Akaii and Mr Bagnall and the Grand Masters Band.

HURRICANE WATCH

A Hurricane Watch has been issued for St. Kitts and Nevis as Tropical Storm Maria moves into the area. A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions, including tropical-storm-force winds and flooding, are possible within 48 hours somewhere within the watch area.
