IMF HAILS NOTICEABLE EFFORTS BY ST. KITTS-NEVIS GOVERNMENT TO COMBAT MONEY LAUNDERING AND TERRORIST FINANCING

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MAY 8^TH, 2017 (PRESS SEC) – During the recent Article Four (IV) Consultation in St. Kitts and Nevis, International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials affirmed the progress that is continuously being achieved by the Government in strengthening the country’s anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing regime.

The IMF team, which visited St. Kitts and Nevis between April 18^thand May 3^rd, 2017, commended the Government of National Unity, saying: “The authorities have further improved compliance with international AML/CFT [anti-money laundering/combating the financing of terrorism] standards and exchange of information…”

The Federation’s demonstrable commitment to implementing international standards on financial transparency was a focus of the Government’s statement issued today, Monday, May 8^th, 2017. It was issued in response to erroneous statements about St. Kitts and Nevis contained in the U.S. Department of State’s 2017 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, Volume II: Money Laundering and Financial Crimes.

CARDIN HOME CELEBRATES 90 YEARS

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 08, 2017 (SKNIS): Donated to the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis by Mr. James Cardin, the Cardin Home opened its doors on May 06, 1927; the institution is now 90 years old. Its goal is to provide quality care and optimal safety, striving to resort and /or maintain the highest level of physical and mental well-being to its residents.

To celebrate this meaningful milestone and to highlight the importance of the Cardin Home in the federation, a number of activities have been planned throughout the month of May. Some of these activities include a movie night at the Cardin Home; an open day and fun day on the Cardin Home grounds; a staff social evening at Sprat Net; a beach-nic; and a church service and re-dedication of church at the Cardin Home.

Minister of State within the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender Affairs, and Social Services, Senator the Honourable Wendy Phipps, congratulated the institution on its milestone and declared open the month- long series of activities marking the Cardin Home’s 90^th anniversary.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 08, 2017 (SKNIS): Monday, May 08, 2017, was a significant chapter in the history of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis with the official opening of the “Inside Government House” Exhibit at the National Museum in Basseterre.

“I am very pleased and honoured to be invited to be a patron of the National Trust…,” said the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Tapley Seaton, as he delivered the feature address. He also mentioned that former Governor General, the late His Excellency Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, was named the first patron of the National Trust. “I am indeed honoured to succeed him in that position” Sir Tapley said.

Heavily Armed Gunmen Rob Ocean Cold Storage

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN FM); WINN FM has received credible reports that three heavily armed assailants held up and robbed Ocean Cold Storage on the Industrial Site Friday afternoon (May 5).

Information received indicates that the masked robbers were wearing army fatigues and carrying what were described as machine guns when they entered the establishment after closing hours, at approximately 4:40pm. They reportedly robbed the cashier of an undisclosed sum of money and her cellphone before escaping in a waiting vehicle.

There have been no reports of any employees being injured. WINN FM understands the robbery was caught on security footage.

Despite calls to various officials, up until news time today WINN FM has not been able to get any information whatsoever from the police.

Bus-Driver Attacked By Gunman In St. Pauls

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); The driver of passenger bus Malcolm X was the target of a gun-toting bandit Friday night (May 5) in St. Pauls.

Police have confirmed that the driver, Malcolm Rouse, arrived at his home in Church Ghaut, St. Pauls sometime after 9pm, and as he parked the bus, spotted an armed individual quickly approaching.

Mr. Rouse ran into the back of his property and the gunman entered the bus, stealing his cell phone and some loose coins.

No shots were fired during the attempted robbery.

WINN FM understands that on more than one occasion in the past Mr. Rouse had been robbed at gunpoint.

Police have launched an investigation into this most recent incident.
