Public Works Assessing Damage To Bath Bridge

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); The Public Works Department in Nevis is presently conducting a preliminary assessment of the damage to the Bath Bridge, caused by heavy rains late last week.

The undermining of the bridge that leads into Bath village, however, occurred over the weekend. The Bath Bridge is said to be several decades old.

Officials closed the bridge to pedestrian and vehicular on Monday (May 15) due to safety concerns over structural failure of critical sections of the busy crossing.

Director of Public Works Raoul Pemberton, speaking to the extent of the damage, said it was due to excessive erosion of the foundation area of the bridge support, mainly in the central area.

DRAFT FEDERAL YOUTH POLICY BEING PREPARED FOR CABINET REVIEW

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 15, 2017 (SKNIS): The Draft Federal Youth Policy for St. Kitts and Nevis is going through its final stages of proof reading as preparations to advance the document to the National Assembly continue.

Special Advisor in the Ministry of Youth, Vernon Connor, said that since the National Consultation on the Federal Youth Policy 2017-2022 was held on March 28, 2017, the document was modified to include feedback from the persons and groups in attendance as well as those submitted via writing. A copy was then shared with experts at the Commonwealth Secretariat and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for their purview. UNESCO provided support for the initiative while the Commonwealth Secretariat facilitated the six-month consultancy of youth expert, Dwynette Eversley, to collect and organize the content.

NATIONAL WORKSHOP FOCUSES ON BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 16, 2017 (SKNIS):  A national workshop currently underway in St. Kitts and Nevis is targeting middle and senior level government officials, policy makers and analysts, whose roles and responsibilities are linked to biodiversity and who are directly concerned with sustainable development planning at the national level.

The workshop, which run from May 16-18, will focus on “Mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Biodiversity Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). The use of innovative integrated environment assessment tools and practical participating methods to demonstrate the relevance of biodiversity will also be introduced.

Sylvester Belle, Chief Conservation Officer – Department of Environment, explained that the workshop is to “provide some training for multilateral stakeholder agencies around St. Kitts and Nevis regarding biodiversity related Multilateral Environmental Agreements – the United Nations SDGs, and we can see the synergies among these various instruments in terms of advancing biodiversity protection in St. Kitts and Nevis”.

DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR TO IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICE

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 16, 2017 (SKNIS): The public can expect improved service from the staff at the Department of Labour following a training session on customer service to be held on Wednesday (May 17).

Labour Officer, Lucinda Francis, said that the afternoon workshop was important as the department expands its engagement with employers, employees, representatives of partner agencies and other individuals. Initiatives such as job site visits, trainings for clients and stakeholder groups, and the Employment Services Unit – which, includes a soft skills training component – all require regular professional and efficient communication.

DEPARTMENT OF GENDER AFFAIRS REACHES OUT TO GRIEVING MOTHERS

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 16, 2017 (SKNIS)—A support group for Grieving Mothers established by the Department of Gender Affairs in 2016 reached out to grieving mothers in a show of empathy for this year’s Mother’s Day, which was celebrated on May 14. 

The grieving mothers were honoured by the director, Mrs. Celia Christopher, and staff of the Department of Gender Affairs, who chose to celebrate mother’s day by honouring them for their contribution to their families. 

The grieving mothers were treated to a day at the spa with manicure/pedicure and a luncheon in their honour. The activities then moved to her Majesty’s Prison, where care packages were delivered to female residents as part of the department’s day celebration.
