Government Confirms Ongoing Market Surveillance on VAT Reduction, Urges Retailers to Pass on Savings to Consumers
 

Basseterre, St. Kitts (February 3, 2025) – The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis, through the Consumer Affairs Department, continues its market surveillance efforts to ensure that the benefits of the recent Value Added Tax (VAT) reduction are passed on to consumers. The reduction in VAT from 17 to 13 percent, which took effect on January 01, 2025, was designed to ease financial burdens and enhance affordability for households across the Federation.

SKNDF-Coast Guard responded to a suspected drowning at Shitten Bay

On February 1st, 2025, the RSCNPF received a report from the SKNDF-Coast Guard of a suspected drowning at Shitten Bay. The incident occurred between 11AM and 11:30AM. Our investigations revealed that eighty-one (81)-year-old John Edward Jeffrey, a cruise tourist from London, England (passenger on vessel Iona), had been snorkelling when he was observed to be stationary in the water. He was quickly brought aboard the snorkelling tour vessel, but all attempts to resuscitated him proved futile. He was transported to the Coast Guard pier where he was pronounced deceased. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of death.
