The recent participation of the St. Kitts & Nevis athletic team in the just concluded FLOW CARIFTA Games in Curacao, has been a costly undertaking that cost the St. Kitts & Nevis Amateur Athletic Association, SKNAAA, over EC$100,000.00.

This amount was required to facilitate travel and preparation for the National Representative Team, which picked up a Gold Medal over the weekend.

The funding was made available through a joint initiative by the St. Kitts and Nevis National Olympic Committee (SKNOC), the Federal Government of St. Christopher and Nevis and the St. Kitts and Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA).

The national team journeyed to Curacao via Virgin Islands Air Link Charter valuing at USD32, 600 or EC$88,570.94. The SKNOC was very instrumental by ensuring that this was made possible by covering 50% of the charter cost.

Our Federal Government also made a generous contribution of EC20, 000.00. This would have been the second consecutive time within weeks that the Government would have honored financial requisitions from the SKNAAA, having also donated EC40, 500.00 to assist with replacing the High Jump bed and other equipment destroyed in a fire at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium, days before the major inter school competitions.

Other ancillary expenses budgeted to prepare Team St. Kitts and Nevis included accommodation levies, uniforms and gear for the team, inter island travel, stipends and emergency funds. This equates to a total of EC$112, 399.81.

At the 2017 FLOW CARIFTA Games, St. Kitts and Nevis secured a Gold Medal for the third consecutive year, when Under 20 Male High Jump Athlete, Jermaine Francis outclassed his competitors in grand style to secure the CARIFTA Games Record, the National Junior Record and National Senior Record.

Francis’ performance now ranks him at #2 in the World for an Under 20 Athlete and #19 overall. Along with Francis’ historical achievement, there were a host of highlights which includes Jahnaza Francis’ double World Under 18 Qualifying Performances in the 400m and 400m Hurdles, Leroy Chapman’s personal best in the 800m Heats and Finals, the Under 18 Male 4X100m and 4X400m Teams being competitive and advancing to the Finals, Shanice Elliott being the first Female Junior Sprinter since 2009 to advance to the Final in an Under 20 100m and a cohesive effort by the team overall to excel.

The team of eleven (11) athletes and three (3) officials is scheduled to return to the Federation later today (Tuesday 18th April 2017).

The SKNOC and the Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis remain the major financial contributors for the SKNAAA. Within the past two (2) years, well over one million dollars was spent on preparation and competition which was made available as a result of their generous contribution. For this, the SKNAAA remains grateful.

18015836_10209015615539821_1777363642_oA suspected gunman, who was allegedly disarmed by citizens and severely beaten during an attempted robbery at a shop in Girard, Cacao, Babonneau early Sunday morning, is now in serious condition at hospital, according to reliable sources.

Reports are that after 1 a.m. Sunday, a masked male, dressed in all black, and carrying a gun, entered Lenny and Company liquor and grocery shop in the small rural community, demanded everyone to “pass it”  as well as taking some rum.

At the time, there were about six persons in the shop, some of whom were playing a card game.

But little did the suspect knew that this Easter was not going to be a rewarding one. The persons in the shop, including the owner fought and overpowered him. He was disarmed, beaten, stripped naked and beaten again, and again.

It is alleged that a “red car” that was observed dropping him off at the location earlier, drove off after he was overpowered by the persons in the shop.

17949855_10209015615779827_351694760_oA relative of the shop owner, who prefers to remain anonymous, told St. Lucia News Online that the business community has been suffering because of a number of armed robberies.

“We want the public to know because that is not the first time they are coming and rob people in the area,” she said. “Because we have a lady higher up the road, she has a shop. And the lady willing to close her shop because they robbed her once last year and two  times for the year already, at gunpoint and with mask.”

This time the citizens fought back and won.

“So he came in, he burst a shot, and he ask them to ‘pass it’, he asked my uncle to ‘pass it’ so my uncle moved fast and think fast,” the relative explained. “So he tell him he don’t have money … he (the gunman) end up going on the other side where the fellas gambling, then my uncle rush outside and close the door and prevented him from going outside. And that’s how my uncle was able to take the gun from him and then they start giving him licks.”

By the time the suspect was handed over to the police, he was bleeding profusely and required immediate attention.

“The people in the area made him talk,” the relative noted.

The Babonneau Police Station confirmed that the suspect is in police custody at the hospital in “serious condition”. The matter is under investigation.

It is not yet clear if the firearm was handed over to the police.

Sizzling Heat miss playoffs despite record rally

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-basketball-nba-playoffs-idUSKBN17F0FF #

Published 13 April 2017

The Miami Heat completed a stirring second half to the NBA regular season by setting a new milestone on Wednesday but their brilliance was not rewarded with a playoff berth as the growing trend of resting players took on extra significance.

The Heat were the victims this time, their season drawing to a close earlier than they would have preferred despite a 110-102 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Miami made an awful start to the campaign and were 11-30 at the halfway mark, but the Heat became the first team to rally from more than 12 games below .500 and avoid a losing record.

They finished 41-41 and needed either the Chicago Bulls or Indiana Pacers to lose their final games to reach the playoffs.

The Bulls, however, breezed to a 112-73 victory against a Brooklyn Nets team missing six players, while the Pacers cruised to a 104-86 win over the playoff-bound Atlanta Hawks, who rested five players ahead of the post-season.

“The league has got to step in here, because this is a very big black eye for this league,” former NBA Coach of the Year Hubie Brown said during the Indiana-Atlanta game.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has expressed concern at the practice of resting so many players, but apart from promising to schedule teams to play less games on consecutive days, it has offered few other answers on how to solve the problem.

Boston clinched the top seed in the East, ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who lost their last four games, playing the final two without LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.

In the Western Conference, there was nothing at stake on Wednesday except for home court advantage for the series between the Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz.

The Clippers had to win their game against Sacramento to clinch the fourth seed ahead of Utah, and they did so easily, 115-95.

Match-ups for the first round of the playoffs.

Eastern Conference:

Boston (1) v Chicago (8)

Cleveland (2) v Indiana (7)

Toronto (3) v Milwaukee (6)

Washington (4) v Atlanta (5)

Western Conference:

Golden State (1) v Portland (8)

San Antonio (2) v Memphis (7)

Houston (3) v Oklahoma City (6)

Los Angeles Clippers (4) v Utah (5)
